What is an IP number?

Every machine when connected to a Network (Internet) has a unique IP Address (Internet Protocol Address), or commonly called an IP Number. This can be assigned to the machine (Dynamic IP) or be manually set (Static IP).

There are 2 standards for IP Addresses now.

IP Version 4 (IPV4)

Example: 192.168.0.1
As the Internet has grown we are slowly running out of these numbers.
The theoretical maximum of IPV4 addresses is 4,294,967,296. (4.3 Billion)

IP Version 6 (IPV6)

Example: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334
As a result of running our of IPV4, IPV6 was developer allow 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,770,000,000 addresses. (Alot!)
